Eligibility

Entries must have been produced or published during 2019.

Submissions can be by anyone associated with the entry. Work designed for the TDC and by the Chair and Judges is ineligible.

No identification of designer/submitter (e.g. business cards) may be attached to front or back of print entries, other than official Entry Forms.

Types of entries

  1. Single Entry — One item only.

  2. Series/Campaign Entry — Two but not more than six typographically and conceptually related pieces in one category for the same event, product or subject matter, such as posters, ads, booklets, television commercials, packaging, etc. If more than six items are submitted the Show Committee will select six representative pieces for judging. Unrelated items, e.g. different books by the same publisher or different productions by the same theater, must be submitted as single entries.

Entry Areas

Entries may be submitted in one of two areas:

  2. Digital Media (Series can be mixed in Print and Digital Media)

    All formats are eligible.

  • Editorial (Magazine, Newspaper and Newsletter)

    The entire publication or an article covering several pages is considered a single entry. Spreads or entire articles submitted as single entries must be removed from the publication.

  • Exhibits (Displays, Point-of-Purchase, Signage, Architectural and Dimensional Design)

    Signage systems, exhibition booths, etc. are always series entries.

  • Experimental / Fine Art / Unpublished

    Any work you have developed but has not been produced for a client.

  • Identity

    Always a series entry. If sending printed samples they must be mounted (see mounting instructions). Not to exceed six selected, representative items, e.g. logos/trademarks, stationery, envelopes, folders, identity manuals, photographs of signage,but not posters or packaging.

  • Logos/Trademarks/Symbols

    Include firm or institution name and, if necessary, a one-sentence description on the front bottom of the entry (not on the Entry Form). Maximum size: 11 × 17 inches (28 × 43cm). Photostats, computer prints or printed versions are acceptable.

  • Miscellaneous

    announcements, invitations, cards, menus, etc. —Invitations may include response card and envelope. Additional pieces constitute a series entry.

  • Mixed Series

    A series entry (which can be mixed with digital items) two more typographically and conceptually related items pertaining to different print and/or digital media categories.

  • Packaging

    Two or more items in one photograph comprise a series entry.

  • Posters

    If entering a printed poster you may ship either flat or rolled.
    DO NOT SEND DIGITAL FILES IF YOU ARE SUBMITTING PRINTED POSTERS.

  • Self-Promotion

    Any work to promote yourself or design firm/agency.

  • T-Shirts/Apparel

    All formats are eligible.

  • Web sites

    For judging submit one of the following:
    1. Screen captures of 2-4 representative screens
    2. A short video showing the key screens or animation.
    3. URL

  • Apps

    For judging submit one of the following:
    1. Screen captures of 2-4 representative screens
    2. A short video showing the key screens or animation.
    3. The Android or iOS app file.

  • Other (Banners, Email, Kiosks, DVD Interface, Presentations, other)

    All formats are eligible.

  • Movie Titles — Feature Films

    1. Opening Titles
    2. Visual Design
    3. End Credits

    All submissions should be uploaded to a video site (ex. Vimeo.com) and the link to the video submitted for entry. Files may be sent in QuickTime format, 1280 × 720 with h.264 codec, using a file transfer service (Dropbox.com, WeTransfer.com or similar services).

  • Motion — TV Shows

    1. Opening Titles

Print — Entries like signage, displays, exhibits, etc. need not have been produced by printing and can be submitted as photographic prints.

Motion — All submissions should be uploaded to a video site (ex. Vimeo.com) and the link to the video submitted for entry. Files may be sent in QuickTime format, 1280 × 720 with h.264 codec, using a file transfer service (Dropbox.com, WeTransfer.com or similar services).

Demonstrations — For entries that require demonstrating specific actions or functionality we suggest creating a video and submitting it as part of your entry. Follow the submission guidelines for MOTION catergory entries.

Student Work — Please see TDC66 Student Category Design Rules.

Typeface Design — Typeface Design is not part of TDC Communication Design. It is a separate competition which is judged by a different jury.

How to Enter

Entering the competition requires the completion of a separate entry form for each project entered (single or series) and submission of materials for judging.

Entry forms must be completed online at tdc.org/enter and each will include and or indicate:

  • Professional or Student Work
  • Single or Series entry (indicate number of items, not boards, for series entries)
  • Category
  • Title or identification of entry
  • Contact information of the submitter
  • Submit materials for judging
  • Choose 1 (one) submission type:
    1. Upload files or include file transfer link to download files
    2. Submit URL or link to video (for websites and motion entries)
    3. Send physical printed samples or digital files on a flash drive or other removable media.

    4. NOTE: If you upload or send digital files
      DO NOT send printed samples.

Payment

All submissions require payment of applicable Entry Fees.

If your work is selected for an award you will be required to send an additional Publication/Hanging Fee.

Uploaded entries

  • Uploaded materials for judging must be JPEG in RGB with a pixel dimension of 2000 pixels on the longest side in 72dpi.
  • File names should include the name of your project.
    Ex. Project-title.jpeg
  • Up to 4 JPEG files can be submitted for a single entry.
  • Series entries can have 2 JPEG files for each piece in the series.
  • Multiple JPEG file names should include the name of your project and numbering. Ex. Project-title-01.jpeg, Project-title-02.jpeg

Sending Physical Work Or Prints

  • If the actual piece is unavailable/unmanageable (e.g. signage, displays, POP, large packaging, billboards) photographic prints 8 × 10 inches (20 × 25 cm) are acceptable.
  • Photographs with more than one item are series entries.
  • Entries in the Identity category MUST BE MOUNTED on a board and not exceed 14 × 22 inches (36 × 56 cm). Items may overlap.
  • The maximum of six selected, representative items for series pertains to the number of mounted items not boards.
  • Mounting in all categories other than Identity is optional.
  • The maximum size of boards is not to exceed 14 × 22 inches

  • No entries will be accepted after Friday, January 10, 2020, Noon EST

Entries must be delivered to the TDC offices by
Friday, January 10, 2020, Noon EST

If more than one package is shipped, this must be indicated on the outside of each package, e.g. “1 of 2”. Packages must be delivered prepaid. Non-U.S. contestants should mark each package “Printed Matter for contest entry. No commercial value”. No provision will be made by TDC for U.S. Customs or airport pickup. Any customs fees will be charged back to the entrant.

NO ENTRIES WILL BE RETURNED

THE TYPE DIRECTORS CLUB IS NOT RESPONSIBLE IF THE ENTRIES DO NOT REACH THE TDC OFFICE IN TIME FOR THE JUDGING. NO ENTRY FEES WILL BE RETURNED. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE SURE THE FREIGHT/POSTAL SERVICE YOU USE WILL DELIVER THE ENTRIES TO THE TDC OFFICE IN TIME FOR JUDGING.

Awards

Only winners will be notified the week of February 3rd, 2020 by email.

All winners will be charged a US$100 ($80 for TDC members) Publication/Hanging Fee for each single entry and US$150 ($120 for TDC members) for each series entry in order to be included in the annual book and exhibitions.

Publication/Hanging Fees are reduced for TDC members. Publication/Hanging Fees help defray publication and exhibition expenses for this organization.

Best in Show

The judges will be asked to decide upon a piece of work (or series) from the winners that best embodies the TDC mission and presents a breakthrough idea. The Best in Show will be announced at the TDC gallery opening.

Certificates

Entries selected by the jury will receive Certificates of Typographic Excellence. They will be exhibited in the 66th TDC Exhibition, and appear in Typography 41. The opening of TDC66 will be held in New York City and will be on display during the summer of 2020. Winners will be asked to supply digital files of the winning entries for use in Typography 41.

Travel Exhibition Material

Winners will also be asked to supply eight (8) additional copies of winning entries for use in exhibitions outside New York. These shows travel throughout North America, South America, Europe and Asian countries. Credits of individuals and firms that have contributed to each entry will be included in the exhibitions and in Typography 41. By entering you hereby grant TDC permission to use, display and send the submitted Works in traveling shows.

IN THE EVENT OF ANY DISPUTE REGARDING THE ELIGIBILITY OF THE ENTRY’S QUALIFICATIONS, THE CHAIRPERSONS’ DECISION IS FINAL.

Entry is declared to be a 2019 production.

I hereby grant the TDC irrevocable permission to show the work(s) in exhibitions, on the TDC website, and to publish it/them in the TDC annual and other publications including uses resulting in monetary benefit to TDC. I also grant an irrevocable right permitting TDC to use images of work(s) in all forms of publicity and marketing for the TDC, in competition and exhibitions. I further grant TDC a right to use my name and image solely in connection with the show, related marketing and publicity and the TDC annual.

I hereby represent and warrant that the materials I submit to the competition(s) and their publications are my original work and will not infringe upon any personal, property or intellectual rights (i.e., copyright, trademark, and patent) of others and that I have full power to enter into this agreement and that all information is accurate and I hereby hold the TDC harmless from any breach of a representation and warranty made herein and any action arising from my submission and entry material and information.
